Internet marketing tips – 3 Great Easy Ways to Find a Niche!

Article by Patricia Lombard

If you are struggling to come up with ideas for your website, then this article is for you. I will be looking at 3 sources of niche ideas that you can brainstorm and delve deeper into to discover some great micro-niches. First of all, it is important that you understand a few concepts.

Markets, Niches and Micro-niches

A market is an online community of individuals sharing a common interest in a specific subject matter. For example, photography or sports memorabilia. Within each market there are many smaller sub-markets. In the photography market, we might come across the sub-market“vintage photography”. Inside each niche there are many smaller sub-niches. For example the “Vintage Period Costume Photography”.

In a micro-niche there are fewer potential customers than in a market or a niche, <b<BUT more importantly, there are also fewer competitors, making it an attractive place for beginners to create their first website.

Amazon.com

This is a great place to find interesting markets and sub-markets.

Begin your search in the magazine section

Truth be told if there are entire magazines devoted to a topic, many people will be seeking information online about this topic. To access the magazine section go to:

Amazon.com (you don’t need to open an account, as you will only be browsing!)On the left hand side of the page, click “Books”Click “magazines”Click “Browse subjects”- a list of magazines categories will be displayedFrom there you can narrow down your search to a specific field of interest. For example, “Craft & Hobbies”.

On the left hand side of the page you will be presented with a list of potential niche ideas like: baskets, beadwork, book making, etc. You can delve even deeper by clicking on a specific niche like “papercrafts”. This will bring up magazines on scrap booking and card making.

Google Searched Based Keyword Tool

Go to: http://www.google.com/sktool

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “or see top keywords across all categories”. This will take you to a page of markets and sub-markets which are familiar to Google.

Click on a category link and see what comes up. You will notice that the results (within a same category) are drastically different from Amazon’s. This is why Google sktool, used in combination with Amazon, is another great place for brainstorming niches and ideas

Trend spotting with eBay

All the “movers and shakers” always appear first on eBay.

Go to http://www.eBay.comClick all categoriesSelect a category – for example “Baby”Click Categories within BabyYou will be presented with numerous sub-categories (baby grooming, baby books, etc.)

By selecting a sub-category, for example “baby grooming” you will then be able to access more micro niches like (baby skin care, bath toys, etc.)

By following the above-mentioned procedures, we are efficiently “micro-niching”. It is essentially starting with a large market and breaking it down to a small sub-markets.
